Albanians are an ethnic group and autochthonous nation with its residing in Albania and the countries around it. They speak the Albanian language and have their origin going back to the ancient Illyrian & Epir territories in the western Balkans (Europe). Today more than half of Albanians lives outside of Albania & Kosovo, whilst the majority lives in the Balkans.
Albanians are the largest ethnic group in Albania, about 98%.
Albanians are divided in two major linguistic groups: Gegs and Tosc, that besides some differences in the language also differ in culture and religious faith. Tosc are mainly in the South of Albania and are divided into Muslims and Christian Orthodox, whilst the Gegs are mainly in the North and are divided into Muslims and Roman Catholics. Anyhow the differences between these two groups with the growth of urban life have been disappearing more and more.
